The UC Davis Bookstore TechHub recently held a photo contest using our Facebook page. The theme of the contest; “How Do You See Davis?” We asked people to show the rest of the world Davis through their eyes, using the wonder of digital photography. These photos were then voted on by fans of the TechHub Facebook page, which will then be voted on in person by those who visit the TechHub during Picnic Day (4/16/2011). So take a look at the top five after the break.

Dorian Toy: “As a freshman at UC Davis, I shot this the day after a howling rainstorm, behind the Tercero dorms. To me, this picture represents Davis’ variety in weather: one day it can be raining cats and dogs, the next day can be bright and sunny with a luscious deep blue sky. The beauty of the post-rainstorm reflections vividly captures this essence, and as we all know with Davis’ weather, we should always be prepared for the unexpected!”

Stephen Lee: “…as a freshman living in the Tercero dorms, one thing is always evident where ever you walk around and that is going green. I took this photo which features the Positive Impact bottle that every freshman received at the beginning of the year. Every time I use this bottle, I am constantly reminded of the number of plastic bottles NOT being consumed and thrown away. Davis is special and unique and I’ve recognized that going green needs to start with the individual’s effort. Taking a baby step forward is what is needed. I know that my acts of going green can encourage my peers to follow suit. It is like the ripple effect in my photo. One small splash starts a cascade of ripples that follows the first. Cheers!”

Sandy Lee: “Whenever I think of Davis, Dutton Hall is at the forefront of my thoughts; its gorgeous architecture and tough brick exterior; its peaceful and serene environment, much like the rest of Davis. When I was a new transfer student, Dutton Hall was the first campus building I entered and it was at that moment that I felt like I was officially a part of the UC Davis community. Whether you’re a student or a visitor, the Davis experience should include a quick trip to Dutton Hall. :)”

Martin Wong: “UC Davis has a lot of great people, and a lot of new faces each year. However, not only human faces, also a lot of cow faces. Due to our strong veterinary and medicine programs, we learned a lot about animals at UC Davis. At UC Davis, cow is not just an animal, but also a symbol of our proud sustainability, our contribution to local farmer’s market, and of course our “Bossy Cow Cow” cheer. Most importantly, every time I see a cow, it reminded me of all the joy I had at UC Davis, a lifetime experience.”

Antonia Huang: “I have met some of the most dynamic and unique people at UC Davis. My photograph is merely a snapshot of a crowd, full of friends and strangers coming together to show their UC Davis Aggie Pride. The people that have crossed my path, and even those who haven’t, these past four years have all attributed to how I see, live, and breathe Davis.”

There you have it, the 5 finalists for our “How Do You See Davis?” photo contest. Be sure to come by the TechHub on Picnic Day (Saturday, 4/16/2011) and vote for your favorite entry.
